The main channel Sushumna Nadi, is flowing inside of the spine, from the base up to the head. To its left flows Ida nadi (from the left nostril flowing up to the head, then down 3 cm to the side of the column to the bottom, then back up to the ovary or testis). To the right of Sushumna flows Pingala nadi (from the right nostril flowing up to the head, then down 3 cm to the side of the column to the bottom, then back up to the ovary or testis).
Every physical movement correspond with a nadi, there are nadis for certain feelings, emotions, ecc.. Any impurity or lack of awareness means that energy cannot operate through those nadis. Generally the secret of health, mental and spiritual growth depends on the purity, vitality and flow of these forces through the nadis. The Nadi intersect predominantly at the level of the Chakras, energy structures of circular shape which are rooted in Sushumna Nadi and propagate towards the outside of the body. The tradition speaks about 7 main chakras:
Located in the pelvic area between the anus and genitals in the lower part of the spine and rooted at the lower tip of the spine. It’s related to the Earth element. It’s the seat of vitality which builds up the energy for each type of activity (physical mental or spiritual). Governs the mechanical interactions with the universe (eg gravity) and the physical body (muscles, bones, etc..). According to the yogic tradition Muladhara is the seat of latent Kundalini energy. A person with Muladhara unbalanced may be fat, heavy in body and mind dull, slow and with little desire to do, but very patient. Inert, placid, numb and devoid of passion.
Located three finger breadths above the sexual organs (root of the penis for men, clitoris for women) and attuned with Water element. Governs instinctive life (sleep, hunger, thirst, sexuality, etc. ..) and confers sensitivity and social conformity. A person with an energized Svadhistana is spontaneously seductive, lovable especially in relations with the opposite sex, great sex appeal. People easily get notoriety and materialize their wishes, showing a lot of agility, calmness and harmony in the couple. If the chakra is disturbed the person become selfish, despotic, boastful, prone to degradation and to a chaotic sexuality. The result is exhaustion and premature aging. Svadhistana is creativity and imagination, exaltation of artistic talent, but if it is imbalance leads to a dreamer personality living in a world of imagination.
Located at the navel and connected with Fire element. It rules the digestive system. Coordinates the ambition, ego, willpower, dynamism, making charming personality, strong and confident. People with Manipura Chakra has developed quite a hypnotic effect on the masses and the tendency to act as leaders (eg politicians, military leaders etc. ..) If the chakra is unbalanced it can manifest abuse of power over the others, insatiable desire for power , glory and vanity. Lack of patience, anger and loss of self-control (even with food). A drain Manipura determines a personality rather insecure, shy, trembling and lack of willpower.
Located in the middle of the chest and related to Air element, governs the area of the heart, lungs and thymus gland. Coordinates the feelings of love, affection, altruism and compassion. One who has energized Anahata has a balanced temperament and refined self-control, common sense, moderation, loving devotion to others which produces actions full of enthusiasm, pure and lack of ego. An imbalance produces a personality rather agitated, ungrateful, wicked and selfish.
Located at the level of the throat and connected with Ether element. Governs thyroid, tonsils, salivary glands, pharynx and larynx, cervical vertebrae and the immune system. Coordinates the ability to communicate and express, artistic and spiritual introspection. In this chakra lies the sense of time and space. He who has a very energized Visuddha chakra is a kind person with a refined thought and proves to have something unique and special. A drained chakra instead brings weaknesses of the immune system, hypo-activity or hyperactivity, general weakness or extreme excitement, apathy and indifference towards everything.
Located in the middle of the forehead affects the mind and intellectual ability. Ajna chakra has the ability to control all the other chakras, and if properly energized brings spiritual intuition. Among the few people who have a prevalence of this chakra includes genes, excellent writers, poets, famous scientists and philosophers, saints and benefactors full of self-denial, we can call them super-human. On the other hand the disturbances of this chakra leads to an inhuman personality, evil and deviant minds. The practice of constant energising this chakra can lead to clairvoyance, telepathy or the ability to see and hear above normal human capacity.
Located on top of the head it is not considered a chakra but the door between the individual and the absolute. At this level there is no longer the polarity (lunar-solar, feminine-masculine, good-bad etc …) but there is a perfect blend with the oneness. The complete activation of Sahasrara chakra brings true wisdom that transcends the illusion of separation of the individual essence from the infinity. At this level one produces extraordinary experiences of bliss, and sublime sensations of incredible depth due to the perfect fusion of the individual microcosm with the macrocosm of the absolute. Religious iconographies shows the saints with a halo of golden light above the head that represents the full activation of Sahasrara in the moment of mystical experience and the merging with God.
